I don’t think it is overstating things to say that the next general election will be the most important in a generation. It will shape politics and society on this island for decades to come. We will have to make a fundamental choice between a brand of politics which serves only the narrow interests of the wealthy or a progressive alternative centred on the ideas of fairness, equality and community.

The austerity agenda, by depriving ordinary people of services and resources, is designed to make us think and act individualistically. The architects of austerity policies understand that, under the pressure of having to provide and survive, there is a possibility that we will care less about whether or not our neighbour has access to healthcare or if they can afford astronomical back to school costs.
